2023 USA STILTASANA - Prescott Details
Photography: Bob Luken
The Weather: In general temperatures in July are at or near 88°ƒ in the day cooling off to as low as 59°ƒ at night. Please bring a range of clothes suitable for such temperature changes. We will be out in the sunshine, bringing a hat, sunscreen and long sleeves are highly recommended.
Altitude and Dehydration: Be aware we will be at an altitude of 5000 feet above sea level while in Prescott AZ. People have different susceptibilities to altitude sickness. Please be responsible for your health; alcohol and sleeping pills are respiratory depressants, and thus slows down the acclimatization process and should be avoided. We will be working in a desert climate. Ensure you keep hydrated throughout your stay, bring a water bottle to keep with you at all times. (Alcohol also tends to cause dehydration and exacerbates altitude sickness.)
Wildlife: Prescott is located in the desert. This makes it a habitable spot for much wilderness, rare and sometimes dangerous. It is advisable to check your shoes (including stilt shoes) for scorpions before putting your feet in them! Mountain Lions, bears, coyotes, javelina, bob cats, tarantulas and rattle snakes all frequent Prescott. Not to scare you but just to make you aware of the environment you are coming to.
What to bring: Sunscreen is a must, insect repellent can be handy and a hat are recommended as we will be outside for some of the classes. Obviously your stilts and knee pads are required, and you will also need training clothes and a pair of sneakers for the workshop. Always bring water to the workshop and food to snack on.
Peg Stilts and Knee Pads: We recommend using 2 feet – 2.5 feet aluminum peg stilts for our work, though wooden stilts can work well. All participants must have their own knee pads. These MUST have a plastic outer protection as well as foam. Carpetbag Brigade recommends Triple Eight as a retailer.
Air Travel: The nearest airport is Prescott Regional Airport. United airlines flights from Denver and Los Angeles are available. Uber / taxi will be required to get from the airport to Prescott.
The nearest international airport is Phoenix Sky Harbor. Groome Transportation provides daily shuttles from Phoenix Sky Harbor to Prescott.
